This has been a long time coming.

I think it's obvious by now how I feel about this government, but the past month has only underscored the need to have a better system in place to help us live as a community. As we are now, people are afraid; two incidents, one alarmingly recent, have shown us that even though we may band together there will be those among us who do not wish for peace.

But a witch-hunt is not the answer. Vigilante justice is not the answer. I know that is what you wish to turn to, but there is another answer. I know it's hard to believe. The legal system here is flimsy and unorganized, and though there are valiant men on the force, the law itself undermines their ability to do their jobs. I plan for that to change. Yesterday I went to speak to the men who run the government which desires children to look at pornography, the government who every day show that now they have brought us here, they don't know what to do with us. I sat in conference with them and hammered out a few ideas I hope will make this Dome an easier and safer place to live in.

At the suggestion of my brother, Peter, I have requested that the government work with us to create a complete power registration system which will stop criminals being freed due to mere lack of evidence, and provide the kind of environment that will give people second thoughts about committing such blatant and unjustified violence. Starting next week, all formerly-fictional peoples will be required to register any supernatural abilities or powers they may have with the government. Lies, misrepresentation, or outright failure to do so could result in penalization; but I doubt anyone would refuse to do something that is merely a step we must take to ensure the safety of our community.

I have also agreed to be a temporary representative of the formerly-fictional people to the government. I know that we all seem to joke that the government runs this world like a dystopia, and that's not what I want. I want a world where criminals are kept in jail and we have the same rights as everybody else. Registration is just the beginning, but I will also be attempting to stop the unnecessary monitoring of people's personal activities and looking into how we can make a better life for ourselves here.

It's been ten months, ladies and gentlemen, and we're still here. We all want to go home. But we have to make plans for the fact that in another ten months, another year, we will still be here. Just as with the unfortunate cases of Andrew Wells and Cordelia Chase, I cannot undo what has been done, only attempt to prevent it happening in the future.

Sorry if this is a little formal, at the moment I don't really have much other way to present my ideas to you all. I will be setting up a system to receive your complaints which is a little more professional than the commenting system here. For now, though, feel free to vent your issues and I'll address what I can.

"Supernatural abilities" is kinda vague, especially considering that I think there are plenty of people here who could still fuck people up pretty bad the old fashioned way. Or with plain old technology, how are you going to handle that? I mean, there's nothing supernatural about being a walking weapons depot, but I get the feeling you'd probably want to know about that too.

Also, uh, sorry to come right out of the gate with the rampant cynicism, but somebody's gotta ask this one. Do you honestly think that registration and whateverthehell the penalty for failure to comply is -- do you think that'll make a difference to the kind of people who stir shit up like that? I mean, laws work great, okay. But only for the kind of people who'll actually follow them.

Can't help but feel like I've been through this one again. Try again, dude.

I believe the understanding would be that once we know how to handle the supernatural beings, then we can move on to handle the ones that we might be more capably able to handle. It's not something that will be fixed immediately but the law force needs all the help it can get. Many of us are officers from worlds that didn't train us to handle these types of beings. Being able to understand their abilities will help us best.

You did great, Nathan.

I get the "understand your enemy" thing, and okay, yeah, it's not going to go far, but first step is the biggest blah blah something. But really, I'm more thinking that the kind of people you need to know this shit about, the ones who are actually likely to give you trouble, are the ones who aren't going to go "oh, snap, legal penalties!" and go politely put their powers on file, you know? I think if the Hunters back home had told Sigma to sit down for a virus scan or be fined, he would have laughed them out of the room. And maybe blown the room up for good measure.

Buuuuuut hey, I worked for the "Problem Solving With Big Guns" branch of the government back in my world, so maybe I just don't get it.

Suffice it to say that we do have the means on our side to put forth this plan.

[identity profile] copier.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
If I came from anywhere but my world, I might actually be able to take governments seriously when they say that. :(

Good luck, I guess.

I believe it'll be our mission to restore your faith in the government.

oh man, with where I come from? You've got a lot of work ahead of you. xD

A man stays in the hospital for twelve hours and there's a sudden yet inevitable rise to power. Good job, Nathan.

I understand the big picture you are inevitably aiming for, but maybe you should push for a more sophisticated gun registry in Babylon first. That would be the more logical step following this initial incident.

[identity profile] becomingspecial.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather not. I don't have the luck of these two to withstand all that nuclear exposure.

But a power registry sounds like a great idea.

I can't read what you're saying, but I think Mohinder's father already had a similar plan to this, Petrelli. I don't remember it deterring violence, but it was so long ago.

Are you not in favor of this idea?

[identity profile] qinglongweiji.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's foolishly and haphazardly thrown together to sate those who were harmed, and those who are worried about being harmed. I can see the holes, and the sudden invasion of privacy. So, no, not in this particular form, I don't think I am.

[identity profile] uponawitch.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
How typical.

I see.
