I'm pretty sure it's a day named after St Valentine, I dunno who he was but I could look it up for you? Mostly they name days after 'saints' - usually people who die for a good cause, spend their lives devoted to the Church, stuff like that. Then over the years it became a day when people could express affection for each other by giving romantic stuff. Flowers, chocolates, things like that. Gives people who might be shy about that sort of stuff an opportunity to confess their feelings.
