I did have the same question myself. The process has been thoroughly tested with proper scientific procedures, including test subjects; certain characters were brought through, returned, then brought back again. Sometimes they were earlier incarnations, but if they were able to pull them from a point past the timeline from which they were originally taken, they did recognize this world.
